Antique Victorian R.B.M. Atrice 1874 Gold Filled Elongated Oval Shaped Synthetic Ruby Locket

$200.00

Antique Victorian gold filled elongated oval shaped locket by R.B. MacDonald Co. centering a star set round synthetic ruby cabochon. The vivid gem adds a nice pop of color to this classic turn of the century design. The locket measures 7/8" wide x 2" tall and hangs from an 18" gold filled curb chain. The reverse side of the locket in plain.

It is in very good condition with a few minor imperfections -- there is a small dent on the top left hand side of the front which is not very noticeable. In addition to very minor scuffs and scratches on the outside, there are small areas of discoloration on the inside of the locket (see photos). It closes with a firm snap.

The R.B. MacDonald company manufactured many different types of gold and sterling jewelry in Attleboro, MA (the jewelry capital of the US) the late 19th/early 20th century, but they were perhaps best known for their Little Beatrice lockets.

The mark on these lockets - which come in a variety of styles -is a bumble bee with the letters "RBM" on the top and the letters "ATRICE" on the bottom. Read top to bottom, the combination of letters and the image of the bee give you Beatrice. The year of the company's founding, 1874, is also a part of the mark. The company started manufacturing the lockets in 1904.
